5” GAUGE AUSTRIAN ÖBB CLASS 1245

By Phil Brien

Phil Brien’s Austrian Federal Railways’ Class 1245 was photographed at the National Model Engineering and Modelling Exhibition, then at Harrogate, and at the sadly defunct Model Engineer Exhibition. Some 41 of these BoBo locomotives were built in the mid-1930s with 1700kW of power giving a top speed of 80kph.

One of the main uses was for the typical Austrian milk trains that rolled across the scenic landscape of the Ennstal valley. The trains comprised many refrigerator cars; small regional farmers delivered the milk in cans, which was then filled into the refrigerator cars at the intermediate stations. When the train arrived in Stainach-Irdning, the milk was  quickly unloaded.
