BIGGER BENSON BUILD
By Jason Ballamy
1. The model

The engine is based on one of a range of vertical pillar engines made by W.Benson in or around 1862 and below is a contemporary engraving showing the engine. I have always liked Anthony Mount’s (‘AM’ from now on) models and this engine is shown in Vol 2 of his book: Historic Engines Worth Modelling. However, at 1:12 scale it is a little small for my liking so I have scaled it up to 1:9 scale giving a flywheel of around 10” which is within my lathe’s capacity. The book includes a series of reprints of the various build series that have appeared in either ME or EIM and includes almost all the drawings. You can also buy the drawings, or drawings and castings, from Bruce Engineering.

We start on the construction next week, with emphasis on the use of fabricated parts rather than castings. Meanwhile, here are some details of the original and photos of the completed model.
