Most of us don’t need a full set of Metric or Imperial plus Letter and Number drills. Most will never be used! It is surprising how few metric sizes will cover the usual tapping drill and reaming sizes for model engineers. However, a small set of basic sizes is a necessary investment.

Drills are changing. Modern designs of twist drill are replacing traditional jobber drills in industry and new types are now quite economic for the home workshop. The ‘Elite’ type described on this page have TiN coating for longer edge life, a special spiral for improved swarf clearance, and a ‘split point’. The result is a drill that can be used to cut any metal other than rare hardened heat treated or wear resistant steels (Hardox 400 and Hardox 500) which are unlikely to find their way into a model engineer’s workshop. These drill are OK for mild steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, Titanium, copper, brass, aluminium, and thermoplastics.
The cutting action means that the drill is centred and centre drilling is not necessary. Less likely to bend, also. Less cutting force is required. Faster cutting speeds are possible, with machine tools in good condition.
These drills can be reground, a sharp square edge must be dressed on the grinding wheel.
Incidentally, the geometry of traditional jobber drills is the result of tradition going back to the days when all drills were hand powered, rather than any modern scientific research!
CENTRE DRILLS
Mostly a BS2 centre drill is sufficient for the model engineer when starting holes in the drilling machine, lathe, etc. and for making female centres for turning. Others are available.
REAMERS
Hand reamers with straight shanks. When used on a lathe or drilling machine, use plenty of coolant for good results. All sizes to 1/16 to 1in. and 1.5 to 40mm. Competitive prices.
