Stuart No 9 horizontal steam engine

This model is a horizontal steam engine made from Stuart castings. It is a Stuart No 9, widely regarded as one of the most attractive engines in the Stuart range. It is a model of a typical large powerful engine of the type used to provide power to machinery in factories and mills.
What is different about this particular engine? Well, the basic design was improved on, but more significantly it was the first piece of model engineering by Cherry Hill, then Cherry Hinds. It was built over a period of around 18 months between 1956 and 57. It was entered in the Model Engineer Exhibition, and awarded a Bronze Medal. More than that, of course, it set Cherry on the path to the position today where she is universally regarded as one of the great model engineers of all time, winner of numerous Gold Medals and Duke of Edinburgh Awards, the highest accolade in model engineering. For her latest model see the Blackburn agricultural engine on this website.
This model was given to the Society of Model and Experimental Engineers and can often be seen on SMEE stands at exhibitions. It is pictured here at the Brighton Modelworld event.
