It is great to hear that a goodly number of Tobies have been started since the design featured on MEWS a while back. And many are finished - as seen here - to the words and music by Steve Eaton, pictured above firing up one of his many 2 1/2 inch gauge engines lined up behind a larger smart new blue Toby at a recent rally. Toby is the ideal beginner’s or quickie loco with its marine type boiler, slip eccentric valve gear and simple chassis - see photos. As it is a narrow gauge design, there are no fiddly bits and it runs very well indeed with plenty of adhesion weight. If you are a beginner, forget ideas of a 7 1/4 inch gauge Pacific for a while and build a Toby this year.
