R Holland
UNION PACIFIC 0-6-0 SWITCHER IN 5” GAUGE

An impressive Union Pacific switcher in 5” gauge shown by R Holland  at the Doncaster show in 2017. Even more impressive when you realize that there were no drawings available and the model was completely designed from photographs.

These locomotives were built for shunting wagons in the giant American marshalling yards until 1953. Thirty of the locos were built by Lima in 1920.

Trains up to three-quarters of a mile long were put together by these locos, hence their small wheels and big cylinders. The wheelbase was short to negotiate tight bends. Design changed over time and it is doubtful if any two were exactly the same.
