WALL ENGINE IN THE
SMEE COLLECTION
One of the many joys of the Society of Model and Experimental Engines is its restored collection of stationary engines, many of which are shown at exhibitions. This Wall engine by C H Tidy is based on an engine from around 1870. The idea behind these engines was that mounting the flywheel on a brick wall saved the cost of steelwork. This engine has an oscillating cylinder with unusual valve gear and was photographed running at the London exhibition in 2018. It was restored recently for the SMEE by Owen Bird and now runs smoothly. All the tiles are present and new handrails complete the attractive appearance.
