1874 10-BARREL GATLING GUN

By Russell Taylor

This impressive 1:3 scale model of a 10-barrel Gatling gun was shown by Russell Taylor at the 2019 Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition.

Invented by Richard Jordan Gatling, this gun was chambered for the 45-70 government black powder cartridge. Cartridges were fed to the gun from a stick magazine (as in the model) or a Broadwell rotary magazine.

The model’s barrels were made from mild steel bar and flame blued. All the brassware was also made from solid bar stock, no castings were used, and screws were made from stainless steel. Carriage and wheels are in American white maple.
