Having written earlier about a simple gas engine, Edgar T Westbury described an improved type of engine, still in keeping with the general features of an orthodox horizontal open-type engine, but including more recent ideas to promote efficiency and reliability. It had to be large enough to be capable of doing useful work, but small enough to be machined on an ML7 while avoiding the need for small, delicate parts.

The Centaur also had to be adaptable to different uses and fuels. Bore is 1.5” and stroke just over 2”.
