Readers of a certain (old!) age will remember the days of domestic coal fires and heavy horse drawn domestic coal delivery. Memories of Herculean strong men covered in coal dust, wearing leather jackets, caps and shoulder capes carrying full hundred weight sacks of coal to the bunker or a ‘coal hole’ in the house.  All came to an end in the 1950s when London smog led to coal being banned for burning in homes.
