Drawings and castings for this engine, designed by the late Arnold Throp C. Eng., M.I.Mech. E., have been available for many years from Southworth Engines. Julius de Waal has produced this new set of drawings which are in metric. We publish them with permission from Bob Potter who keeps great designs alive at Southworth Engines. However, we should point out that the metric version is larger than the imperial original and the castings are not interchangeable. This metric version is designed to be fabricated.

The original Throp design is a large model, necessarily so, to ensure that the trip valve gear works effectively. These drawings are for a single cylinder engine.

Arnold Throp had been apprenticed at the Bradford firm of Cole, Marchant & Morley whose output included Corliss valve engines. George Corliss was based in Rhode Island and his engines were a success in the US and Europe, ranging from small single cylinder to huge 3000HP. A number have been preserved.
