The Gorgon was a steam frigate launched in Pembroke in 1837 and was the first Royal Navy fighting ship to be powered by steam. Her engines, by Seaward and Capel, were the first vertical direct-acting fixed cylinder marine engines. Cylinders were 64” dia by 65” stroke driving paddle wheels 27ft dia. The general machinery was 4ft below the water line. Gorgon gave her name engines of this type.

Dereck Langridge’s model used geometry of the cylinders and parallel motion by Guenther Kallies (see https://modelengineeringwebsite.com/Gorgon_engine_build.html for a complete build of that version.) However, Dereck’s version is from sketches by the builder of how a typical engine installation might appear. All the materials used in the construction were either stock or from a scrap bin.
