GRESLEY’S 0-6-2
GNR N2 LOCO
7.25” Gauge Society
Shown at a Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition by the 7.25” Gauge Society, this splendid model of a Gresley N2 was approaching completion. The N2 was a development of Ivatt’s successful N1 class; main differences were that the N2 had a superheated boiler and was fitted with piston valves. It also had larger cylinders and increased water capacity. They had condensing gear, necessary for working in the Moorgate tunnels in central London.
The N2 was designed for local passenger train work. A total of 60 were built up to 1929, and mainly used on the Kings Cross Metropolitan services with others allocated to Scottish sheds. Those built specifically for Scotland had a taller chimney and no condensing gear. The demise of the N2 came with the introduction of diesel locomotives from 1959. The final twelve were withdrawn in 1962.
The sole survivor is No 69523, preserved by the Gresley Society.
