Photos from the MEWS archive, taken at a Bristol exhibition of a Horwich Crab built in 5” gauge. Drawings for a model Crab were produced by Don Young back in the day, and many have been built. It was a favourite of Don.

The Horwich Crab,or LMS Hughes Mogul is a class of mixed-traffic 2-6-0 steam locomotive built at Horwich and Crewe between 1926 and 1932 to the design of E S Cox. Some 245 locomotives were built under the supervision of Fowler, later to be responsible for the BR Standard locomotives.

When new, the Crab was an unusual looking locomotive in that it had a high running board, . This was futuristic as the last steam engines to be built some 30 years later had this feature for ease of maintenance. It also had Walschaerts valve gear, copied from the Pennsylvania Railroad, and outside cylinders.
