MIDLANDS EXHIBITION

2012 PREVIEW

2012 marks the 35th year of this highly regarded and successful exhibition, which attracts more than 11,000 visitors each year over five days. With two exhibition halls packed with around 1000 models, demonstrations, displays and more than 40 leading specialist suppliers in attendance this show brings together everything the model engineer could ask for in one location.  A free lecture programme covering a range of topics will feature both popular returning presenters and new faces and will run throughout the five day event.

At least forty clubs and societies will be showcasing their members’ work this year. This will range from small stationary and IC engines, workshop equipment, right through to large locomotives and steam road vehicles.

There will be a special display marking 300 years major development of steam power (see Newcomen engine above), live demonstrations of the gas turbine GT3 locomotive, and miniature farm machinery. A 7¼” gauge
Winterthur ‘Tigerli,’ which is based on the Swiss prototype and uses machining techniques not normally seen in the UK, will also be on display. Outside the magnificent Fosse Steamers and the 5” gauge outdoor track will this year be joined by Starlight, a 10¼" gauge live steam locomotive - approximately 1/5th size, which will run on 100m of portable track.

The following societies will be celebrating anniversaries at this year’s exhibition: Hereford SME – 50th Anniversary; Kinver & West Midlands SME – 50th Anniversary; Bromsgrove SME – 30th Anniversary, and Kingsbury Water Park Model Boat Club – 40th Anniversary.

There is till time to enter the annual competition. Entry is free and there are 32 classes divided into 2 sections. Competition and Display classes include: locomotives, rolling stock, stationary and IC engines. Judging will take place on the first day of the show and the awards ceremony will take place on the final day. Models still under construction can also take part in the display classes.
