SOUTHERN RAILWAY
Q CLASS 0-6-0 LOCO
Ivan Hurst

Anthony Mount

Model is a Southern Railway Q Class locomotive designed by Maunsell, as running for British Railways in the early 1950s. Built to Ivan’s own design and drawings, considerable research was carried out including measurement of 30541 herself on the Bluebell Railway.

The model sports the Bulieid/Lemaitre five nozzle exhaust arrangements to which all Qs were converted during their life, although a number (including 541) were converted back again to conventional drafting. The original ‘big chimney’ was found in a stores van on the Bluebell enabling its dimensions to be determined.

The boiler was based on the successful Maid of Kent/Minx design. but with the appropriate changes in some dimensions as scale dictated. The motion was based on Don Young's Porn Porn. modified to reflect the original. which had a steam reverser.

The tender is the standard Maunsell 3500-gallon type. and dimensions were taken from one on the Watercress Line.

The model was designed and built with public passenger hauling in mind, rather than as a ‘glass case’ project. It was photographed at a Guildford Exhibition.
