Sweet Pea was the outstanding design of Jack Buckler, first published in Engineering in Miniature and later in a TEE book. During that time large numbers have been successfully built - many by absolute beginners. Being based on a narrow gauge Bagnall type engine, it was large. Imposing even. But it is designed to be simple. The marine type boiler is much simpler to build than the usual loco type, and the Hackworth valve gear is definitely an easier proposition than anything except slip eccentric. This pleasing example by Wilf Baker seen at Doncaster in 2016 is fitted with a squared Kerr Stuart type saddle tank rather than the rounded Bagnell version.
