WOODWARD’S GEARLESS MECHANICAL CLOCK

From the MEWS photo archive is this Woodward’s gearless mechanical clock photographed at a Harrogate exhibition. Instructions for building one of these fascinating clocks were given in a book from John Wilding. Information is also in Woodward’s own book My Own Right time (rated as the best ever by a horologist friend of MEWS)..

A daisy wheel is used to obtain the clock’s 12:1 reduction rather than two pairs of gears. The daisy wheel has 11 petals and engages with a pin wheel with12 pins
