This eye-catching double-sided beam, or side lever, engine was photographed by Jason Ballamy at the 2025 Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition.

Double beam engine drawings were first published on MEWS. Bob Middleton’s original design in imperial units can be found here. Julius produced a metric version here.

The unusual, attractive and fascinating-to-watch double sided beam engine has two beams driving a single flywheel. As with all Bob’s and Julius’ designs it is constructed from bar stock, with no castings needed.
