D Collins’ smart dock shunter was shown at a Midlands Model Engineering Exhibition. The 11XX dock tank locomotives were a rarity on the GW in that they were fitted with Walschaerts valve gear. It was also one of the first model locos described for 7.25” gauge.
The Midge model design was by C. R. H. Simpson and described by George Gentry in Model Engineer magazine back in 1935; Martin Evans produced a new boiler design for Midge in the 1960s.
Six 1101 class locos were built in 1926 for the GW by the Avonside Engine Company. None survived into preservation.
