HORIZONTAL MARINE STEAM ENGINE

By Julius de Waal

Most engines for model boats are arranged vertically. Perhaps not a great use of space. This horizontal design, revisited by Julius, has a low centre of gravity. Also, the propeller drive can be taken off in a forward or rearward direction, and there are separate piston valves for steam and exhaust. This should not be short on power, the design being scaled up from the original which had a 5/8” bore and used to drive models up to 40” long.
